Serious Fun: Upcoming Fundraisers Benefit the Community
Tara A. Spears

No matter what interests you, there are numerous themed upcoming events that are exceptional and worth attending. Fundraising is often viewed as a means to an end—a way to gather financial support for a cause or organization. Really, you’re going to eat and drink anyway, why not benefit a cause as you indulge?

Wednesday Jan 21

For the coastal community of Jaltemba Bay, the next two weeks offer several great events that guarantee a good time, a tasty meal and entertainment that is sure to leave you satisfied. All of the events support vital initiatives that benefit the local people. Wednesday, 21 January is the annual Women to Women Fashion Show, the oldest fundraiser in the state, that provides women’s university scholarships.

Friday Jan 23

On Friday January 23, the JEEP (Jaltemba Equine Education Project) provides shelter and sterilization for abused or homeless animals.

Sunday Feb 1

Next, Sunday February 1, the Rotary International group event will fund many civic projects, especially helping schools.

Monday Feb 2

Last but not least, is the Rock the Block Street Party, Monday February 2, which provides financial aid for cancer prevention, treatment, and aftercare.

There are lots of reasons to attend one-or all- of the area’s parties, even if you’re on vacation. It’s a cool way to meet local people! I’ve met so many good, fun people at these fundraisers that I moved here permanently. I feel personally enriched by getting to know new people: as I learned from one group ‘I came as a stranger but left as a friend…’ Even more exciting to me is that the outcome of each fundraiser helps build a stronger community, and has lasting positive impact. Many of the volunteers and most of the beneficiaries are awe inspiring. These individuals motivate me to get involved and try to make a difference.

It’s true that fundraising events bring people together who share a common goal or passion, fostering a sense of camaraderie and solidarity. Whether it’s a Fashion Show, raffle and silent auction, or gala dinner, these events provide a platform for individuals to network, collaborate, and form lasting relationships. These connections can extend beyond the event itself, leading to a more cohesive and supportive community or long-lasting friendships.

Don’t be put off by the term ‘fundraiser’: all of this groups are nonprofit and staffed entirely by volunteers. There is no paid executive. The funds generated at each party are used altruistically to support the group’s objective. Period. Every dollar or pesos you spend at the event is utilized to accomplish those goals. No taxes, no salaries, just a lot of genuinely caring individuals that devote MANY hours to help others.

From the first Jaltemba Bay fundraiser that I attended in 2008, I’ve been participating each subsequent year. It gives me such a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose knowing that my efforts are contributing to a worthy cause. Besides, I have so much fun at these parties! Studies have shown that acts of generosity and altruism are linked to increased levels of happiness and lower levels of stress and depression. By helping others, you are also helping yourself.

Ok, you’ve made the decision to go to one (or two) of the events. All of them are held outdoors and while there is some shade, you need to plan for the effects of tropical sun by applying sunscreen beforehand. Each has a cash bar and intriguing silent auctions with lots of great choices. Who doesn’t love a 50/50 raffle? Be sure to go by an ATM in advance because none of the events accepts debit of charge cards.

Remember that your presence is creating meaningful change. The money you contribute can provide vital resources, support innovative projects, and improve the lives of countless individuals.  See you there!
