Captured after only a few months, Hidalgo was executed by firing squad. Despite his death, other revolutionaries, including Vicente Guerrero, continued the struggle until Mexico achieved independence in 1821. Today, Miguel Hidalgo is remembered as a national hero, and the Mexican state of Hidalgo is named in his honor.
