Villahermosa, which translates to “Beautiful City” in Spanish, lives up to its name with a rich mix of history, culture, and modern amenities. The city was named by Diego de Quijada, Mayor of the Yucatán, in 1560, under the orders of King Philip II of Spain. Founded on June 24, 1564, it has since grown into the bustling capital of the state of Tabasco.

Villahermosa is situated in the state of Tabasco, near the southern tip of the Gulf of Mexico. Its prime location makes it an excellent stopping point for travelers exploring the region.

Villahermosa experiences a tropical climate, with very hot summers and warm winters. Even in the cooler months, temperatures remain warm, making it a destination where travelers should prepare for heat year-round.

Getting There

From the East
If you’re driving from the east, take Highway 45 south, then continue east as it merges into Highway 180. This route will lead you straight into Villahermosa.

From Mérida
Travelers coming from Mérida should follow Highway 180 south, which will take you directly to Villahermosa as well.
