San Felipe, Baja California: A Desert Oasis by the Sea

Photography by Bill Bell

San Felipe is a vibrant town located on the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) in Baja California, Mexico. Just 190 kilometers south of the United States border, it lies within the municipality of Mexicali. Known for its stunning landscapes where the desert meets the sea, San Felipe is a prime destination for camping, RVing, and soaking in the unique natural beauty of the region.

How to Get There

San Felipe is easily accessible by road, with a scenic drive through Baja California’s desert terrain. From the United States, travelers can cross the border at Mexicali and head south on Federal Highway 5 for about 190 kilometers. The town is also served by an international airport, making it convenient for visitors flying in.

What to Expect

Weather and Climate:
San Felipe boasts an average temperature of 24°C year-round, making it a perfect getaway at any time. However, temperatures can vary widely with summer highs reaching up to 46°C and winter lows dipping to 4°C at night. The region is famous for its dramatic tidal changes, with tides exposing up to a kilometer of ocean floor at low tide, a spectacle that occurs due to the influence of the Colorado River Delta to the north.

Activities and Attractions:
San Felipe offers a variety of outdoor activities, particularly for those who love the water. The town’s port, historically reliant on fishing, now thrives on tourism. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, and exploring the tidal flats. The RV parks and campgrounds are well-equipped to accommodate the influx of visitors, particularly during popular U.S. holidays such as spring break and Memorial Day.

Population and Community:
San Felipe’s population was recorded at 14,831 in the 2005 census, but this number can swell by up to 5,000 during peak tourist seasons when American part-time residents and vacationers flock to the town. The community is a blend of local Mexican culture and the influence of international visitors, creating a unique atmosphere that is both laid-back and welcoming.

San Felipe is more than just a travel destination; it’s a place where the beauty of nature meets the warmth of a close-knit community. Whether you’re an avid photographer, a nature enthusiast, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, San Felipe offers something for everyone.
