Discovering Hermosillo, Sonora

Hermosillo, the vibrant capital of Sonora, is one of Mexico’s fastest-growing cities. Its rapid development is driven by the manufacturing industry and its strategic location near the U.S. border, just 270 kilometers away. Although many travelers pass through Hermosillo on their way to southern destinations for the winter, this city is more than just a stopover—its beautiful city center, with outstanding architecture, is well worth a visit.

Known as the “City of the Sun,” Hermosillo boasts a population of approximately 790,000, making it the 16th largest city in Mexico. Situated at an elevation of 216 meters, Hermosillo experiences an arid desert climate. Summers are exceptionally hot, with July averages reaching highs of 42°C (108°F) and lows of 28°C (82°F). Winters, though milder, can be surprisingly cold, with January highs of 24°C (75°F) and lows dipping to -3°C (27°F).

Founded on May 18, 1700, by Lieutenant Juan Bautista Escalante, an explorer in the Mexican Army, Hermosillo has a rich history and cultural heritage. The city is served by General Ignacio Pesqueira International Airport, making it easily accessible for visitors.
