A Family’s Love for Guadalajara, Jalisco
By Dorothy Bell Photography by Bill Bell
“Our family always looked forward to visiting Guadalajara. There’s so much to do that everyone gets their big city fix. For some, it’s the incredible shopping at the many markets or modern shopping centers. For others, it’s the cultural experiences—visiting the theater, opera, galleries, and other events.
Did I mention it’s the home of Mariachi music, with clowns on every other street corner, and the vibrant Ballet Folklórico? We love it all. Just walking down the street, sitting in a square, or visiting a church or cathedral is so inspiring.
Writing about Guadalajara now, I can taste it in my mouth and feel it in my soul… Jeez, it’s time for a visit.”
A JOURNEY THROUGH GUADALAJARA: TIMELESS CHARM IN THE HISTORIC CENTRO
As I stroll through The vibrant streets of Guadalajara, I am reminded why this city never ceases to amaze me, even after decades of visits. Nestled in the heart of Jalisco, Guadalajara blends tradition with modernity, creating a captivating tapestry of culture and history. My favorite place to stay has always been the Historic Centro, where each corner holds a story and every plaza invites exploration.
The Historic Centro is a pulsating heart, filled with life and character. Walking through the grand Plaza de Armas, I am drawn to the elegant wrought-iron gazebo, surrounded by lush greenery and the harmonious buzz of locals and tourists alike. The stunning yellow dome of the Hospicio Cabañas rises in the background, a reminder of the city’s rich architectural heritage. Families and couples enjoy leisurely afternoons here, adding to the plaza’s warm atmosphere.
Guadalajara is a city of artists, and the Centro is a testament to this creative spirit. Vibrant murals and sculptures adorn public spaces, each piece telling its own story. The imposing figure of La Mujer en el Corazón de México stands proudly, a striking sculpture that captures the essence of the city’s artistic soul. Nearby, street performers and mariachi bands fill the air with music, creating an impromptu celebration that invites everyone to join.
Every visit to the Centro brings me closer to the city’s history. The Metropolitan Cathedral, with its iconic twin spires, stands as a beacon of faith and resilience. Inside, intricate stained-glass windows and sacred art pieces offer a serene escape from the bustling streets outside. The Palacio de Gobierno, with its impressive facade and historic murals, provides a glimpse into the region’s political past and artistic achievements.
While deeply rooted in tradition, Guadalajara also embraces the modern world. The vibrant shopping districts and contemporary art galleries blend seamlessly with the colonial architecture, offering a dynamic experience for visitors. The juxtaposition of old and new is most evident in the vibrant markets, where traditional crafts coexist with trendy boutiques, making for a shopper’s paradise.
As the sun sets, the Centro transforms into a magical landscape of twinkling lights and lively plazas. Mariachi music echoes through the air, inviting diners to savor local delicacies at charming restaurants lining the streets. I find myself at a cozy café, sipping on rich Mexican coffee while watching the world go by, soaking in the ambiance that only Guadalajara can offer.
Guadalajara has a way of drawing me back time and again. Each visit reveals new layers of beauty and culture, reaffirming my love for this city. Whether it’s the warm hospitality of its people, the stunning architecture, or the vibrant arts scene, Guadalajara remains a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be discovered. As I prepare to leave, I know that the Historic Centro will always hold a special place in my heart, a timeless testament to the enduring charm of this remarkable city.
