Mexico is investing more than $100 million to improve the highway leading from the Arizona border south to the popular beach town of Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point.
The project aims to modernize the stretch of highway between the Lukeville-Sonoyta border crossing and Puerto Peñasco.
Highway 8 is a popular route for Arizona tourists traveling south of the border for vacation in the Sonoran beach city.Construction on the project to rebuild the approximately 55 mile long highway started at a groundbreaking ceremony in Puerto Peñasco on Thursday.
“Today is a historic day for Puerto Peñasco,” Sonora Gov. Alfonso Durazo said at the ceremony.
The investment also includes an improved border crossing entrance in the Mexican border town of Sonoyta, where the highway begins, according to the city of Puerto Peñasco.
