Mexico has announced it will participate only as an observer in US-led Board of Peace overseeing Gaza ceasefire plan
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico would not join as a full member because both Israel and Palestine are not equally represented within the framework.
“Given that we recognize Palestine as a state, it’s important that both states, Israel and Palestine, participate. It isn’t set up that way,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference.
She explained that Mexico would instead send its ambassador to the United Nations to attend the inaugural meeting in Washington, DC, as an observer.
“They invited us to attend as observers; if we were not going to participate, then to attend as observers. Together with the foreign minister, we decided that our ambassador to the United Nations would attend as an observer,” she said.
Sheinbaum has previously described Israel’s military actions in Gaza as genocide and has consistently advocated for a two-state solution. Mexico officially recognizes Palestinian statehood.
The Board of Peace, announced by President Donald Trump, includes several US allies from Europe, the Middle East, East Asia, and Latin America.
Experts argue that the absence of direct Palestinian participation undermines the credibility of the initiative.
