Restaurant Mendoza: A Family Affair

Restaurant Mendoza: A Family Affair
Tara A. Spears
The great chef and international traveler, James Beard, believed that “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.”
No vacation is complete without sampling the local cuisine and starting with the family operated Mendoza’s is a wonderful introduction to Nayarit style cooking. It was a childhood dream of owner Anita Mendoza Ruelas to have her own restaurant.
The central La Penita restaurant is on Bahia de Banderas Sur about three blocks south of the main Avenida. It is open every day from 8 am until 8pm, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner (322 278 4026). If you prefer sand in your shoes and ocean view, Mendoza’s 2 ( 322 182 1182) is just what you need.
Located in south Guayabitos, the restaurant is accessible from the beach or land; it has the same extensive menu at reasonable prices plus a full bar at both locations! For more than ten years Mendoza has many loyal customers that rave about the authentic Mexican dishes. It took many years of hard work for Anita to achieve her dream of having her own restaurant.
“I worked more that 20 years in other restaurants to learn how to service crowds,” explained Anita. “I am a self-taught, natural cook who loves to create good, quality dishes. My biggest reward is when customer’s leave happy and satisfied. Some days, it is being able to get each meal just right and served quickly!” Her son and daughter also work in the restaurant. (lead photo) When selecting items for the menu, Anita chose dishes that are her favorites or those that many customers have requested. She prefers to use local fresh caught fish and other ingredients to get the best results. Not only does Mendoza’s Restaurant and bar provide cozy ambiance with the leather hacienda style chairs but during the winter months both locations offer live music.
You can dine in, call ahead to order and just pop in to pick up meals, or if you catch your own fish, Anita will prepare and serve your catch! For those that have special dietary needs, Anita is happy to adjust (within reason) to suit your health needs. The La Penita location accepts cash, credit card, or debit cards. Mendozas ask for a deposit when making an advance reservation.
Both locations have a well stocked bar if you simply want to sip a cold one to relax from busy activities.  Mendozas offers several brands of beer, tequila, and other types of popular beverages.  Their margaritas compliment the tropic location and taste sooo good!  They also have Canadian TV for sports events.Restaurants are not just a place to satisfy our hunger, they are also where we can connect with others, celebrate life’s moments, and create unforgettable memories. The magic of  a family neighborhood restaurant lies in the experience they provide to their guests. Mendoza’s is a must try dining experience!
