“Hill of the Demons.”

Named by the Aztecs after the local warriors who fiercely defended their city.

Tehuantepec is a colonial city located on the isthmus of Mexico. Women play an important role in the city and Tehuantepec is often called a matriarchal society. While there is an air of confidence and purpose to the women, the leadership roles only appear to be dominant in the many markets that grace the city.

Festivals and traditional celebrations are important here. Tehuantepec is famous for it’s heavily embroidered womens dress. Frieda Kahlo adopted the dress and is often pictured with a Tehuantepec tunic.

History:

The Zapotec Indians founded Tehuantepec before the arrival of the Spanish and the language and many of the customs remain.
