Early Life and Education
Benjamin Hill was born on 31 March 1874 in Choix, Sinaloa, northeast of El Fuerte. He received his early education in Chihuahua. His father then sent him to Europe to continue his studies in Germany and Italy. Upon returning to Mexico, Hill became involved in agriculture and politics. In 1908, he was elected to the Navojoa City Council.
Revolutionary Involvement
Hill joined the revolution in 1910, siding with Francisco I. Madero. Consequently, he was imprisoned in Hermosillo until April 1911. Upon his release, he raised a volunteer army in Navojoa. Hill fought in various campaigns, including those against Pancho Villa. In 1914, he became the Governor of Sonora and was later appointed Divisional General.
When Álvaro Obregón assumed the presidency of Mexico, he appointed Hill as Secretary of War and the Navy. Unfortunately, Hill died a few days later at a luncheon in Mexico City. It was rumored that Obregón was grooming Hill as his successor and that Hill’s main rival, Plutarco Elías Calles, poisoned him.
