Sonoyta: Your Gateway to Puerto Peñasco and Mexico’s Coastal Adventures

Sonoyta/Lukeville  Your Gateway to Puerto Peñasco and Mexico’s Coastal Adventures

As you begin your Mexican adventure, Sonoyta, Sonora, serves as a welcoming gateway just across the border from Lukeville, Arizona. This small but significant town is your first stop before heading to the popular coastal destination of Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) or further south to explore Mexico’s coastal treasures.

Located in the northern part of the state of Sonora, Sonoyta is steeped in history, dating back to its founding in 1694 by Father Kino as a Jesuit missionary community. Its name, derived from the Tohono O’odham language, means “Base of water,” a reference to the springs that sustained the area’s earliest inhabitants. Today, it remains a humble farming and ranching community, with essential services like banks, restaurants, and medical facilities to support travelers.

With a population of 13,000 and an elevation of 400 meters (1,300 feet), Sonoyta is a town where travelers can pick up supplies, make a quick stop for a meal, or visit an ATM before continuing their journey on Highway 8 to Puerto Peñasco or following Highway 2 east or west. The desert climate brings cool winters and scorching summers, so plan your trip accordingly.

Though Sonoyta doesn’t offer RV parks, nearby options are available in Lukeville, Caborca, Santa Ana, and Puerto Peñasco. Whether you’re looking for a brief respite or a place to fuel up before hitting the road again, Sonoyta is an essential stop on your drive into Mexico’s beautiful coastal regions.
