Discovering Cataviña, Baja California: A Desert Adventure
For the companion travel page, see our Cataviña road-trip guide. This page retains the earlier photograph and map versions.
Driving the desert highway of the Baja, there are many places that catch your attention along the way, but Cataviña always remains vivid in our memory.
Cataviña is a small community in the central desert of Baja California, on Federal Highway 1. Its granite boulders and desert vegetation make it a memorable stop on a peninsula road trip.
The desert landscape
The boulder fields and desert plants are the main reason to pause here. Plan time to enjoy the landscape without turning a long driving day into a late arrival. Arrange any campground stay or guided visit directly before travelling.
Exploring Ancient Art and Natural Wonders
Visitors can explore nearby cave paintings with the help of a local guide. These ancient artworks offer a glimpse into the lives of the region’s earliest inhabitants. The unique rock formations and boulder fields surrounding Cataviña add to the town’s mystique.

Landscape, rock art and history
Baja California’s tourism guide describes Cataviña’s granite formations, the Valle de los Cirios landscape and nearby rock art. It also identifies the ruins of Misión Santa María de los Ángeles as a historical site in the area. See the official Cataviña overview for background.
Ask locally about access and a suitable guide before leaving the highway for a visit. Treat rock art and desert vegetation with care. The maps and photographs here provide an overview of the area.
Planning your Cataviña stop
Use our Baja route guide to choose the stops before and after Cataviña, then calculate the distance from your actual starting point. The earlier mileage and fixed driving-time estimates have been removed because they were inconsistent.
- Fuel: confirm current fuel availability along the whole driving leg and plan around your vehicle’s range. Do not rely on old descriptions of closed pumps or roadside fuel sellers.
- Supplies: carry drinking water, food and the supplies needed for your planned stops.
- Overnight arrangements: confirm operation, arrival directions and vehicle access directly with your chosen campground or accommodation.
- Navigation: save your directions before departure and plan to arrive in daylight.
Check current road reports and our guide to animals and other road hazards before setting out.
