This is for you Mom

By Dorothy Bell

We picked up Justine from the Cancun Airport. She was going to travel with us in the RV for a month or so and see some of the marvels that are Mexico.

We were staying in a campsite just south of Playa del Carmen that was almost deserted. It was late June and most of the snowbirds had gone home. But our family remained. Front row seats to the Caribean ocean.
We stayed for a few days and Justine soon became acclimatized. We ate, laughed, and joked around – enjoyed ourselves and our family.

From Playa we headed North through Cancun and then meandered west to Valladolid and the world wonder known as Chichen Itza.
Bill and I are absolutely captivated by the ancient ruins of this country and have visited many of them. Maybe 50 or more. Small or large. We enjoy climbing the pyramids, exploring the underground cenotes and strolling through the dispays and museums. Its our thing.

Its our thing but not our kids. Dylan likes to climb but wasn’t as interested in the culture as much as she was into the action of climbing.
Adam was bored silly. Bored and somewhat afraid of heights. After awhile he refused to climb a pyramid with us and would opt to take pictures of the rest of the family waving from the top. We weren’t going to push him.

So we entered the Chichen Itza ancient site and were very excited to show Justine all the various buildings – the skull platform – the ball park and of course the famous pyramid known as the castle.

Justine, Dylan and I started the climb. Adam declined and stayed at the base. Bill stayed to keep him company and take some pitures. Step by step the three of us started up – at points, hunched over so that our hands touched the stones in an almost crawling position.

Step by step until we made the top.

The three of us cheered and slapped high fives as if we’ld climbed Everest – proud of our accomplishments. We did it.

We faced the temple of the warriors and the marketplace and wondered at all things ancient as we caught our breath.

And then I got a tap on my shoulder.

I turned around and it was my son Adfam wearing a huge huge smile. He hugged me and in my ear said “This is for you mom. I love you.”

Ans son I love you too. I will always love you.

( We continued touring Mexico with Justine and travelled to Palenque, St Christobal de las Casas and then to Puerto Escondito where we stayed for a couple of weeks. We then headed to Mexico City where we dropped off Justine who wanted to stay there for awhile.

As things happen she met her future husband Guillermo at the hotel where she happened to be staying.)
