Los Ayala Mangrove Clean-up Success
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 5, 2024 INTERNATIONAL ENVIRONMENT DAY
A cleaning of the Mangrove of Los Ayala was done. A lot of rubbish was collected, including bottles and various plastics. We know that this garbage ends up in the sea, because mangrove, in rainy season, is filled with water and drains into the ocean.
It is crucial to take care of the mangrove because these ecosystems act as natural barriers against storms and hurricanes, protect the coast from erosion and are vital habitats for many species of flora and fauna. Mangroves also capture and store large amounts of carbon, helping to mitigate climate change.
We were concerned that the rains would come and the garbage would continue to be thrown away, affecting not only the beauty of the place, but also its ability to provide these important ecological benefits.
Thanks to the team of Los Ayala Limpio, we achieved a great cleanup. Now it’s our turn to do our part and make sure we don’t throw any more trash in the mangrove, on the street, or on the beach.
